Real Career Stories

After graduating with a degree in Sport & Exercise Science, I completed the YMCA Gym instructor course at David Lloyd Leisure - Cheadle. After spending a month on the course at David Lloyd Cheadle, I knew that I wanted to work for David Lloyd Leisure. On completion there were no suitable vacancies, so I set off on my career path and performed a number of different roles in the public and private sector of the health & Fitness industry. During this time I was waiting for the right vacancy to become available at David Lloyd. Finally, the Member Relations Manage (MRM) at David Lloyd Warrington became available and my application was successful. I spent 12 months as Warrington's MRM before becoming Sales & Membership Manager.

Throughout my time at Warrington, I had a detailed development plan as my aspiration was to become a General Manager (GM). After a further 12 months at Warrington I attended a GM assessment day and was successful in attaining the GM post at David Lloyd Knowsley. In my first year at Knowsley, we were awarded 'Operations team of the year' after achieving the highest brand standards score in the estate. I spent two enjoyable years at Knowsley before moving to Chorley as General Manager.

This year I have taken on another new role; Sales Impact Manager which is different role again but one I am keen to develop into. I thoroughly enjoy my career at David Lloyd Leisure and it is undoubtedly the best company I have worked for. I hope to spend many a year with the company and one day sit on the board!

Paul McNicholas - Sales Impact Manager (Field role)

I joined the team at David Lloyd Leisure - Bromsgrove into the role of Health & Fitness Manager. Following a successful first twelve-months including strong performance against my KPI's-taking Bromsgrove into the top 5 UK clubs for delivery of personal training income, I was identified by my Regional Director as a potential future General Manager of the business.

I attended an Assessment Day to identify my strengths and weaknesses and a detailed Development Plan was put into place for me that included how I could maximise my behavioural strengths and better understand my areas of development. As part of my development it was suggested that in order to grow my knowledge of the wider business I needed to learn about another club management role and as such over the next three years I carried out the role of Operations Manager. I achieved my objectives here and also continued to work with my General Managerand Regional Director to expose me to other aspects of the business.

I was rewarded with my first full time General Manager appointment in February 2007 at David Lloyd Solihull South. During the two-years at Solihull South we re-branded the club to a David Lloyd Fitness Club and with a lot of hard work from the team the club has delivered a superb set of results with one of the highlights being a 500 plus member gain which has returned a 75% YOY profit growth.

In August 2009 I was again promoted to the role of General Manager of David Lloyd Luton where I was excited by the challenge of a new and bigger club. I have every faith and confidence that following my success so far, David Lloyd Leisure can offer me greater opportunities to grow my career in the future.

Ian Lancaster - General Manager - Luton

I started work for David Lloyd Leisure in 2002 as Assistant Fitness Manager and was part of the opening of the Bromsgrove club. 1 year on and I was given the opportunity to become a Duty Manager, opening the club and ensuring member satisfaction. At the end of 2003 I moved clubs to Solihull Cranmore to cover materinity leave as Fitness Manager for 9 months and stayed a further 8 months at Cranmore as a Duty Manager. In 2005 I was promoted to Sports Manager at David Lloyd Solihull South and 2 years later took post of Sports Manager back at Solihull Cranmore. It was at Solihull Cranmore that I received "Sports Manager of the Year" and in July 2009 I was promoted to General Manager of David Lloyd Solihull South!

From personal experience, David Lloyd have always ensured that development within the company is a high priority. There are a variety of different roles within a vast amount of clubs, which would give an individual a fantastic opportunity to mould a career for life!
